I love John Martyn's music and never really consider his stuff in the realm of rock music. Nor Zeppelin but I guess they're one of the biggest rock bands! I think I need to rethink my strategy a bit. It all started after seeing Sun Ra Arkestra live last Tuesday and actually physically crying during they're set as the musicians were so overwhelmingly good that night that everything else seems empty since. It's a few years since a gig touched me like that.

Oh I hear you on the Arkestra. There is a lot to be said for the humility required to work within an orchestra or big band and I find that humility really humbling. All that time spent learning a craft and then letting it serve the music rather than some great ego wank. I love and respect that. Sure they get their solo spots but the main thing is making the compositions sing. Amen to that (in a non Christian kind of a way!).

I felt that really strongly seeing Music For 18 Musicians performed at RFH this year and a glorious Magic Flute at ROH. Not to mention the Jerry Dammers Sun Ra big band thing last year. It's a blessed time for live music of all kinds.
