An act like this are going to see more than 15% a record. You'd figure more like 25% before deductions for free goods etc. So assuming $15 is correct then that would be about $2.70 in royalty plus the 8 cents per song mechanical with a ten or twelve song cap that they get from the label on the publishing side. So that's a min of $3.50 and a max of $3.66.

If the numbers that are coming out are correct then they may well have been better off per record under a regular under a major label deal assuming they sold the same number of records. And that's even before
you factor in the cost of fulfilling the downloads.

Of course what someone else pointed out up this thread is also true - it's not really just about beating "the man" or cutting out the middle men (though there is an element of that) it's about capturing current data. You can't put a price on getting the names and addresses of 1,200,000 active hard core fans with access to credit cards. Look what say Marillion have done with a mailing list less than 10% that size and project forward.
