perhaps the long bit of a long barrow was for sky burials..

I feel that the first speculation we should make about all this stuff is that they probably were very like us. This is a very convenient thing to do as the "evidence" is easily available whereas for other speculations we have little.

On that basis, why would "I" make my barrow long, despite the fact there was nothing inside the long bit? A: to fake the length and age of my lineage, to reinforce my claim to ownership of the area.

If that doesn't work, then I'd work down the next set of speculations ending up, last of all, with the fourth dimensional stuff ;)
