Blimey!
Serves me right for more faith in academia than it seems to merit. I'd always thought there was some sort of physics related technique involving the ratios of radioactive trace particles on the surface of the carvings vs the uncarved surface.
Or some carbon based thing done on unweathered carvings from the undersides of cist covers etc.

I'm shocked and appalled. ;-)
