Re: What!

It's almost impossible. Old, very old and extremely old ?

Sorry for mumbling on about Blackstone but it's my nearest example. First it had grooves carved in it. Maybe it was a grooved menhir. It was weathered some. Then it had the cup and channel designs made. Later it was scratched with fine lines and reservoirs. Later still it was built into a wall. Three, possibly four, phases of construction. Each is entirely indistinct !

Here's a link to a big buck - http://www.kittyfeet.com/europe/I_SEE_LONDON_I_SEE_FRANCE.htm

The passage grave art, I would guess, was made by a cultural elite - the Rubens/Titian et al. of their day. The rest of the cup and ring material must have been made by local craftsmen - though it's hard to credit that they were even using the same tools. I'm downloading Bradley's Altering The Earth, from Scotland, ( http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/library/psas/monograph08.cfm) and will see what that contains. As a swop I'll upload a couple of stone circles here. Eventually.
