Julian argues that both the name Verbeia and that of the River Wharfe (and I'd add to that the River Wear and a load of others) are derived from the name of a prehistoric water/riVER goddess known as Ver. Interesting you should mention Brigid in that context, though. Julian reckons that all the Bridgits, Brides, Breeshays and so on are all descended from a prehistoric fire goddess known as Bree. There's one section in <i>The Modern Antiquarian</i> where he mentions how Bree and Ver seem to have at one (very early) time been one and the same goddess, known as Bur (also interesting to note that in gallic the "v" sound is written "bh"). Gyrus is probably the best authority on Verbeia that I know of:
