Re: Take that!

It all goes to show that I'm not talking out of my arse (though I sometimes wonder). I even remembered the frequencey of 7Hz. Not bad for a 30+ year recall.

I recall that the French discovered the phenomenon because office workers in Paris were all feeling ill on some, but not all, warm days. It turned out that these days were when two particular policemen were on traffic duty at a nearby road junction. When they both blew their whistles at the same time, the beat frequency caused by the difference in pitch was around 7 Hz. This coincided with the resonance of the office when the windows were open. The funniest part was that the French scientists investigating the phenomenon then went out and built an enormous policeman's whistle out of plywood. It had a fundamental frequency of 7 Hz. A large compressor operated the whistle and apparently, when it was operating, people in the vicinity of the sound felt violent nausea and extreme discomfort in their abdominal regions.
