I think there was always a gauzy kind of melodicism there, a bit like the more recent Grouper...just with added layers to unpeel, giving you more of an excuse to go back and give the songs more and more relistens to unfurl the songcraft underneath.

You know, I get good vibes from Shields & Co. None of the preciousness or lazy irony of many other touted Indie acts. He just seems to live in his own head. 'course anyone quite that popular is usually popular at the expense of a hundred other worthy acts, but frankly I'm glad it's them and not some obnoxious identikit asymmetrical-haired smarmy wankers.
