I remember thinking even as far back as the release of "Fried" - which, incidentally, wasn't widely considered at the time to be the cult classic it's perceived as nowadays, even though me and a couple of my friends loved it - that, whatever else he might have ended up doing, he'd never become a hack nostalgia act churning out his '80s hits to diminishing returns like his old contemporaries McCulloch and Wylie.

I respect him more than either of them simply for following his own muse and not selling out, even if he has occasionally disappeared up his own arse in the process (I'm still not convinced of his ability to do heavy metal, no matter how hard-rawking his backing band might be).

Plus I'm sure he'd never dream of writing a song as corny as "Heart as Big as Liverpool".
