Yeah, I'm not always keen on the judge-for-life idea myself. But it's more or less carved in stone within Federal law.
It's too subject to partisanship, as evidenced by their vote-bending edict that gave us Bush the first time.
Surprisingly, in some cases, even the right-wing appointees actually make sound decisions that go against the wishes of the neocons. And ironically, it's due to the long term nature of a judgeship- these people are not going to be tra-la-lahing there way off to leave their messes for someone else to clean up in a few years.
