on the animism front , have you read any of the Bird-David stuff ?, she is an Israeli anthropologist and is attempting to put it back on the agenda .[/quote]

In my books it's been on the aggenda for quite a few years! Good to know there's a few others bringing this back to academia. It'll be very very fruitful indeed.

I aint heard of the Bird-Davis stuff though.* Gyrus threw a few names at me a while back when we were waffling rock-art and animism, and a coupla chaps he recommended (can't remember their names...these senior moments are getting more frequent!) talked common sense.

* any texts she's written?

Try this http://www.sciencenews.org/pages/pdfs/data/1999/15523/15523-13.pdf

her papers are not free on the web though , jstor accounts needed etc. Tim Ingold is also involved in this re-appraisal . Have you guessed the next RAM area yet ?
