I know what you mean but stripping away all the words and stuff - this is what I am getting at:

I look at a rainbow in the sky and I believe that I see it in the external world. My belief system tells me it is white light defracted into colours. I cannot touch it and I cannot go to it. It depends for its temporary existence on my position in relation to the sun and the rain. My belief system tells me that it is not a bridge to the gods or a promise to Noah. Its beauty is all and I experience a brief heightened moment.

I take a crazy drug and see whirling colours of the rainbow. I cannot touch it and I cannot go to it. My belief system is suspended under the influence of the drug. Its beauty is all and I experience a brief heightened moment.

Both are fugitive experiences and both rainbows are insubstantial and unattainable. Which is real?
