Well I spose he must have seen some that was pinkish, but the only time I've messed about with bits of it the fresh surfaces are gray - maybe it first weathers to pinkish.

If the'd asked me - fat chance - I'd have pointed out you can rub sarsen with flint and a fine abrasive powder and easily get it to shine almost like glass...
