It was the intuitive braking system that I thought was so elegant, but you're right, the packing system is good and carrying it on the stone also qualifies as elegant. I have a thing about elegant, and simple, they're usually signs that something works. And in our context, they're our best pointer to something being authentic: these people had lots of time for trial and error and to refine their systems, so why wouldn't they have decided to carry packing pieces on the stone? As you say, weight is of no significance so I guess they could have also carried spare levers, and tools and food... and ladies - in fact a complete support system for their journey. We could carry a first aid box... not exactly authentic but a symbolic representation that what they transported was also their transporter....!
