They took my Dad's little farm for an airfield and paid him in war bonds. He was only allowed to cash them ten years later - for £100 !

Apologies. No doubt things like that did happen. I should have been more specific and said that it wasn't a general policy to seize ownership of farmland.
But the point you make is an important one. Under those emergency conditions, the government reserved the right to re-purpose all national resources, including land.
