How will the average voter react, bit by bit, as his car use reduces, his heating gets turned down and his luxuries disappear and the available resources dwindle? Isn't his propensity to accept a government that offers to go out and claim those resources for HIM going to increase, bit by bit?
Full totalitarianism might only come after the full disaster hits but the drift towards it will start a lot earlier.


You know what I meant... it doesn't have the galvanizing, immediate impact of being under attack.

I don't know if all-out totalitarianism is even needed, beyond rationing. The Allied civilian populations were pretty good about accepting limitations during wartime. If we're faced with shortages now, considering the overfed nature of our cultures it might actually be a good thing. A leaner America sure as hell would be welcomed.
