Hasn't that always been the case to some extent with American politics? I'm reminded of Nixon's attempt to cultivate a downhome image by blabbering endlessly about his Yorkshire Terriers and his much-touted - albeit probably genuine - love for American football.

That doesn't make it any less wrong, though.
