(Hell, my missus works for an water organisation who has witnessed a Welsh farmer who can dowse a water borehole for you with a better than chance hit rate, so really, what do I know!)

Sounds like he has had a bit of experience and maybe if he's a local he knows the water table and ground water which is rarely that well (pun intended ) mapped .

That's the old safe standby answer, what about if he didn't?

He did though , because he has had a better than chance hit rate , so he's got some experience , the more you do it the better you get . People forget that there are those who find water without resorting to dowsing as an explanation .

Yes but experience of what? If it was a piece or virgin land for him that he was dowsing then he must have 'something within' that helps him find water. What about the very first time he found it, just luck?

Same applies to any who finds water and doesn't suggest it was dowsing . Aborigines do it in desert conditions ,you don't hear them telling you it was due to dowsing . Like finding any kind stuff that is not that obvious you get an eye for it.
