You said it yourself: "it doesn't work with a neolithic axe because I'd know what it was by it's shape and texture even if blindfolded"

The point being, people need to know what an object (or place) is before they can report they are picking up energies or whatever. But if blindfolded would they pick out the real neolithic axe from a big box of purple plastic fake ones? I think not.
