Sheep have a culture. Is the answer. It's deeply strange but it should be argued that it has developed as an adaptive strategy. (Tell this to a banker). There is more to their lives than grazing and shelter. The two examples of strange ewe behaviour that stick in my mind I don't want list here but, if they did run in a straight line, you'd be lost trying to herd them with a dog.
