also got a nagging thought that somebody really commercialised influence taken pretty much straight from The Residents but can't think more specifically right now. Flying Lizards? who I think have been used to s/trk ads.

The Flying Lizards certainly had an odd way with a cover version but musically I think they were more tradtionally experimental than the DaDa Residents. They didn't have that disturbing "other" quality. Both FZ albums are worth checking out but they have more in common with Fripp or Invaders of the Heart than anything Ralph.
