No, we're not gonna agree, Ian.

NME was a great (but not perfect!) rag back then. And between 1979-1990 most of the great music being prtoduced in the UK came from Scotland or the North West of England.

It certainly, post-punk, wasn't coming from London. And I know that hurts you London types! ; )

Well yes us shallow Londoners were waaaay too busy drinking cocktails at Legends and Club For Heroes and hanging out with the likes of Steve Strange and Philip Salon to worry about making music ;-)

Most of our bands from that scene were crap - Animal Nightlife, Animal Magnet, Spandau, Blue Rondo, Havana Lets Go. All fairly awful. But we did have The Slits and Rip, Rig & Panic who at least looked like they enjoyed playing music while turning out some pretty radical shit. And 23 Skidoo. And Linx and Light of the World et al. And nearly all the best Brit Reggae acts. Oh and Culture Club who were pretty great. And PIL. And Basement 5. And the Raincoats. And the LMC scene. So not too bad for a bunch of soft fashionistas.

Doesn't hurt though because if the alternative was the Fire Engines then quite frankly I'd rather be shallow!
