Good points.

AC/Dc is probably out of touch, but the Eagles resounding success speaks volumes for going their own way.

Size of the US ( 4-7 time zones) doesn't really allow for even Prince doing a give away here. Newspapers are much more powerful in UK than here. They do offer an alternate distribution system.

Only NYtimes, Wall ST, and USA Today offer truly US national distribution. Even then a giveaway may be too costly, but worth investigating.

You are correct the lack of a large number of national newspapers in the USA makes it harder to run a nationwide "covermount" music promotion. That said the some of the major regional newspaper publishers in the USA spurred on by the success of covermount disc promotions in the UK considered running similar campaigns in the USA a couple of years ago. However they wanted to change the concept and instead of licencing individual tracks for the equivalent of the multitude of Best of 80's albums or Best Driving Rock compilations that were used by the UK newspaper publishers circa 2004 to 2006 or full albums by established artists, as has been the more recent trend, they wanted to use local unsigned bands and sell advertising space between the songs - for local businesses in order to recoup the costs of manufacturing the discs or even to turn the covermount disc in to a money making element of their own instead of merely a promotional tool to sell newspapers which at the end of the day is what covermount discs are for as opposed to an alternative to selling a disc via HMV et al - that has only evolved by default in the last year or so. Ultimately very few newspaper covermount promotions were run in the USA as the use of advertising on the disc is off putting to consumers and the use of unknown acts (whilst they may get some promotion) is less appealing for a consumer than to pick up some tracks you might like on a compilation or better still a full album for nothing but the cost of the paper.

All the best
