AC/DC latest available only through Wal Mart
Jun 09, 2008, 15:51
Ac/Dc made its downlaods only available thru Verizon, now hard product

only thru Wal Mart, mind you the Eagles sold a few million this way. This

hurts mom and pop record stores that use big acts to drive people into

their stores for other products.

You mean their new album will only be sold thru Wal Mart. Sounds like it totally sucks...

The flipside of this could be like ZZ Top, Aerosmith, lesser extent

Metallica U2, Madonna, REM, Etc acts that are aging and may be past

their prime still commanding large deals that do not always deliver

artistically or commercially.

You'd think AC/DC would be looking at Prince for guidance in rebuilding their audience and building a vibe rather than the bleedin Eagles and James Taylor.

This Wal Mart exclusive is the kind of thing bands do when they have no idea who their audience is or how to reach them. Misguided at best. Dim witted at worst.

After School of Rock they are primed to be one of those older bands that young fans take to their hearts - like Zep, like Jimi - and unlike the Stones who seem to be all nostalgia for baby boomers and have absolutely no leverage with the Kerrang age audience. Especially as AC/DC have never made a truly shit record. Well at least not as shit as the Stones 80s and 90s output.

You'd think they would want everyone and his sister to hear the new record and thus get them pumped up for the really big commitment of spending £75 on a pair tickets and another £20 on a t shirt.

Prince hit the nail on the head by giving his record away, making the tickets reasonably priced and then watching the ticket money roll in. How many nights at the O2 could AC/DC do at £30 a pop with a free cd? Ten? More? Think of the buzz that would generate. They'd rule London for a fortnight.

Some people just don't get the fact that it's like the old days, that word of mouth rules and Wal Mart and the likes of Asda over here are the ultimate word of mouth killer.

Good points.

AC/Dc is probably out of touch, but the Eagles resounding success speaks volumes for going their own way.

Size of the US ( 4-7 time zones) doesn't really allow for even Prince doing a give away here. Newspapers are much more powerful in UK than here. They do offer an alternate distribution system.

Only NYtimes, Wall ST, and USA Today offer truly US national distribution. Even then a giveaway may be too costly, but worth investigating.

That's fair though and the scale of the US is a problem but didn't Prince give his record away at all the US shows as well?

The Eagles / Wal Mart thing was a $$$ success. They made money. Lots of money. But how many songs would the average music fan know if they don't own the record. Everyone I know had the Prince record. Even people who didn't like him much before or hadn't liked anything since Sign Of The Times. The buzz in London was like nothing since the Stones did their Earls Court run in 76. Everyone seemed to be going to a show or wanted to go. AC/DC could be established as the "people's band". A legacy you can't bank but one that guarantees you longevity.

Correct Prince included it in the ticket price, but that only means the converted got the CD, not like the UK scenario.

Ozzy did the reverse with his CD that included free tix to Ozzfest.

I am sure AC/Dc thinks they are being visionary with Walmart, let alone the big picture you are talking about. Somebody will get smart. I guess the closest has been Radiohead.
May be U2...
