This is a gross generalisation but what really f*cks me off about some folks of the indie / post-punk fan mentality is that it seems that they have to be told when riff rock is acceptable before they can respond to it. It's like they consider it to be a lesser form of music or something (like theior attitude to Soul and Reggae) because it is too direct and they simply can't go on gut alone because they are not sure enough of their own taste.

I don't need anyone to tell me what I like, Ian. But you're right, I do think it is a lesser form of music!!

But the 'rawk' fans I know are more close minded than anyone. They're the folk in my experience who revile reggae. If it doesn't have a 4-4 beat and some poodled hair dick yelling some mysogonist shit about his 'baby', then they don't think it's worth talking about! ; )

Which is something that could never be levelled at indie rockers who seem to save their misogyny for the backstage area, the hotel and the tour bus. And of course the Stooges, MC5 et al never uttered an unrighteous word on any subject in their entire careers!

Closed mindedness is sadly something that rock and roll has always suffrered from whether it is Mods n Rockers, Punks n Teds or whatever. But I think you would accept that metal fans were more open to hard rock bands coming out of the indie world like say Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden than "indie rock" kids would ever be to AC/DC.
