I wouldn't make a statement about the whole USA based on your experiences in LA... Haven't been there myself but I know it's a congested, expensive city. I hate expensive congested cites. Used to live in the Boston area, which is small potatoes as far as metropolis's go, and I still couldn't stand the 24 hour a day noise, the inability to get away from human artifice, the overcrowding, etc. Housing costs are insane everywhere, but absolutely, certifiably psychotic in the major cities.

Have a good life in Maui. Sounds like a great plan.
