Evil Edna?
Aug 04, 2003, 01:30
Tiptoing through the tulips sounds lovely, Morfe, and I reckon you'd love it!

I'm sure that the average person is far less offended by nipples than by "gang rape/murder/terrorism/exploding brains". Is the reason for nipples being censored but not exploding heads perhaps something to do with the potency of the religious right in America? Coupled, maybe, with the fact that the scenes of violence are all understood to be special effects etc. whilst naked people can only be the real thing (*shock*). The difference between you and your Dad is that he felt insulted by what he perceived to be the banality (sounds a bit like anality, dontcha think?) of Tiswas whereas you are insulted by the way TV bombards with images of violence (death) but balks at images of sex (life). Its one thing to say "this programme isn't really saying much" and another thing altogether to say "this is an expression of a warped (and evil?)morality".

There's a short story by Ray Bradbury about two people out working in one of the American deserts somewhere. They come back to town after a few weeks completely cut off from everyone and find everything has drastically changed. The town is painted in a thousand different colours, and the streets are thronged with people talking to each other. What had happened? For some mysterious reason every TV in the world had died. They'd all freaked out at first and there'd been a lot of people shouting at each other. But after a few days everyone realised that there was loads of stuff to do and just got on with it. What do YOU reckon? Would the world be a better place or a worse place without TV? (if/when the oil crisis starts to bite the TV's going to look like one big fat waste of resources in any case, surely?)

*dances off through the daisies*
