We have only been aware of their source for less than century .
Geoffrey Kellaway was the first to suggest glacial transport of the bluestones in the early 70's and the debate has continued since then, even here .


I was only fooling around George in response to spencers post:-)
But it could raise a serious question. If proven to be brought down to SH by man, was it the builders that went up to collect them...or did someone else bring them down independently and for another reason?


oops, irony bypass .

It would be very difficult to prove that they had been brought to the area from Wales or Somerset , then used in other monuments e.g.BHS ,as favoured by MPP etc (no evidence that bluestones were ever in the BHS sockets ) ,or just left lying around until later use .
