Practical, political, ascetical. There must have been many reason why churches where built where they where and have nothing to do with the fact that at sometime before a prehistorical structure stood in the same place.

I think it's quite a common trait to pull down and rebuild on the same 'footprint' and if there's salvaged building material as well !
