i certainly read somewhere, about a religious (christian, possibly even papal) decree calling for the eradication of all pagan monuments. unfortunately the knowledge is lost in time in the midst of my mind. maybe they realised they were fighting a losing battle?


Pope Gregory sent a lettre to Abbot Mellitus It was far from suggesting eradication ."The temples of the idols among the people should on no account be destroyed. The idols themselves are to be destroyed, but the temples themselves are to be aspersed with holy water, altars set up in them, and relics deposited there. " .


interesting...although this wasn't what i came across...im sorry to be so vague but i can for certain say it wasn't this.
