Oh, don't get me wrong. I love the bleakness of the moors. And the bilberries and bog cotton. The very highest fells have probably never been forested. They can stay that way!

You're right about the hunting ground thing. I realised as soon as I posted it that I should have said "hunting ground", not forest. Although I do think there were a lot of trees round these parts.
