keeping the wolf from the door
Apr 21, 2004, 16:54
"the last wild one in the UK was killed in Weardale"

Is this true, BG? Surely the last wild wolves in Britain were in the Scottish Highlands, much as I like the idea of them being in Weardale. Although in many ways it would make sense - this used to be the second largest forest in England (after the New Forest, I believe) - now most of the land is the brown-green desert to which you refer. Most people in Weardale don't notice the absence of trees, they think that the land is "meant" to be rugged and bare. The truth is that its only kept rugged and bare for the benefit of the tiny percentage of the population who take pleasure in killing grouse. When I rule the world then these fells will soon be re-forested!
