I have to admit, I've never really even heard much Gong. This is probably a hangover from teenage post-punk puritanism- it was OK to like Hawkwind, cos Lemmy was in them and they only ever had three chords anyway, but it definitely wasn't alright to like Gong, who were virtually a byword for drippy hippy twee nonsense. That said, most people seemed to have a copy of Camembert Electrique at the back of their record collections, as a guilty pleasure (it's the only Gong album I know, and I quite enjoy it).
My mate's band even used to cover 'You Can't Kill Me' alongside the Stooges and Alien Sex Fiend numbers that were more in line with their original material. They also did Caravan's Golf Girl, but only knew the version from the Neil album...
