Gong vs. Hawkwind
May 05, 2011, 17:36
Two iconic long voyaging space travelling bands

both with many offshoots (and post punk spinoffs) and many eras

both on and off ongoing, only one is still waiting for Ginger Baker

synthesist Tim Blake connects both bands

both attract huge tribes of followers,

both with mercurial (band) leaders

Who do you love?

No contest as I only really like Camembert Electrique by Gong, and Hawkwind ... are just Hawkwind. Space Ritual alone crushes entire back catalogues of bands I love.

Always thought of Dave Brock as more Leaden than Mercurial.

It's not really LOVE, but I'll go for Gong for sure.

A draw until extra-time, whereupon Hawkwind get a late header in.

If you're ever single, Sun Ra Gong Head, give us a call. No funny business though.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. And Daevid Allen often comes over as a bit of a knob. Although so do Brock and Turner...

Assessed clinically in terms of the numbers of LPs they've made that I enjoy?

Hawkwind - 6
Gong - 1.5

so Brock's mob it is.

Hawkwind. Though "love" might be a stretch. Space Ritual to Quark inclusive are all pretty great. Calvert was the main man for me. Seemed a bit monchrome without him. Some excellent teenage memories but I could probably live quite happily without hearing either band again tbh.
