I think it's something to do with this forum, never mind the UK, I'm not the worls biggest Gong fan but I've never put them together, Gong are if anything more related to the Canterbury Scene whilst Hawkwind belong in the Fairies,Motorhead,Ladbroke grove scene, if someone said they wanted something similar to Hawkwind [well the classic era] I'd point them towards the Fairies or maybe early Motorhead or High Tide. If someone wanted to hear something similar to Gong I'd send them for a long sit down and some dried frog pills

however, it may have to do with each's use of space
and how they sought to evoke space
