You'll get differing opinions on this - after all, Zappa's discography is dauntingly huge - but I'd plump for these:
Freak Out
Absolutely Free
We're Only In It For the Money (his masterpiece, in my opinion)
Lumpy Gravy
Cruisin' with Ruben & the Jets
Hot Rats
Uncle Meat
Weasels Ripped my Flesh
After that, it was pretty much all over between me and FZ, I'm afraid,
as his music started to get too self-conscious and clever-clever for its own good. Not only that, his lyrics got lazier and more condescending towards his audience (the people who made him famous). Nonethleless,
there are still fans who love all his albums right up until the end.
