I feel much the same way, except for the part about not getting Beefheart sometimes. I'm afraid I never really got it. Perhaps glimmers of that first album.

I was once trapped in a car with a friend listening to Zappa for an hour's trip somewhere, and I thought at one point it might be better to get out and walk. It felt frantic. I realize he had talent, and knew what he was doing, but his music just didn't move me.

A girlfriend of mine calls it 'boy music', and we of the femme persuasion are just not meant to 'get it'. Although having said that, I know that there was no shortage of chicks at his concerts.

I suppose it's just a matter of swings and roundabouts, really.
