Without science we would still be thinking these monuments were built by the Mycenaens , Druids or Romans , not only do we know when many were built but also they were a result of activity at the same site for great periods , we can tell the age of burials and in some cases their diet and a rough idea where they were born .
It is true we may never know why a monument was built , that type of arrogance is the what we might expect from astrologers and woo merchants , but we have a much better understanding of them due to science .
Putative alignments have never been discovered by astrologers of any ilk , the Stonehenge alignment was first noted by Stukeley who used scientific methods in his work and was a fellow of the Royal Society .
"I introduced the idea of the soul, as the most ancient of human artefacts are of people with large bellies, usually dismissed as fertility symbols,"
The most ancient human artefacts are easily at least a million years older than any figurine .
Are you suggesting that big bellies are related to historical beliefs about the the stomach being the seat of the soul ?
Regardless what has astrology or the" soul "told us about stone circles ?

The 'why' of the stone monuments is the subject of this thread and no-one is suggesting that there is any proof or evidence of that, but we can, without arrogance, suggest suppositions based on what is known of those who built them, not much of which has been revealed by modern science. Putative allignments were, in fact, first 'discovered' by the astrologers who built them. The artefacts I mentioned are amongst some of the more ancient, so hey, you literally got me there, but what scientific proof do you have that they aren't representations of the fact that the corporeal soul resides in the stomach?

Astrology has provided nothing to our understanding of the the monuments , science has .
The alignments related to the monuments were built by the builders not discovered by them .
To create the alignment meant observing , more the stuff of astronomy than astrology .
The artefacts that are over a million years older than the the figurines are utilitarian and not represenational .
There is no corporeal soul in the stomach .
