Was it venomous - if so, it was the common viper. Otherwise a grass snake which Britain's largest reptile but harmless.

Not a smooth snake then ?, theyre known to be in Hampshire and Dorset

Now that you mention Postie, I have met a few smooth snakes in my time - I just step aside and let them go on their way.
