Well, I went in the month of May.

I had assumed that there would be a short season when salmon ran up the river to spawn; however, that doesn't seem to be the case. Every river population has developed their own timings. The Aberdeenshire Dee is a famous salmon fishing river and there is a Spring run as well as one from Midsummer to Autumn, as far as I know. If anyone has better knowledge about this then please share it.

Thanks for answering, I have no actual experience of this wonderful sight, though have seen some breathtaking burns and falls in Scotland. I've just found this great web-site about Scotland which tells you month by month when things take place - it puts leaping salmon in March.
