I was stunned by the maths. I used to think that if you got a bit of string and laid out a circle, and then placed the stones according to each observed event as they happen, then of course you would end up with a mathematically correct calendar. But his observations make it clear complex math came first.
I dunno about the ancient writing. Tools stunt the brain. Rely on calculators and you lose the ability to do mental arithmetic. Rely on mobile phones to remember phone numbers, and you can't even remember your own before long. Perhaps they just used parts of the brain which are atrophied in modern man.
