Re: Cheddar man lives

"and knowing that it's been a place of continuous worship for a thousand years sends a tingle through your bones. "

It does. And, if its your home church, a deep sense of continuity with those who went before. I could see our thousand year old church through the bars of my cot. And a bit later we kids grew to think of it as the essence of our community - to the extent that we had a right to attend all ceremonies that took place there, invited or not -

"......We squat in friendly huddle
Upon the dusty churchyard track
That crackled loud, with bits and bones
That once held village flesh,
We scrabble hard, in urchin-haste,
To play a wedding part,
Recovering confetti, and much else besides, to hurl
Grittily, but kindly meant, upon the flinching pair....."

I go back sometimes. All my village ancestors most ancient bones are still lying there in full view on the paths and flower beds. I trust the present generation of kids are still throwing them at brides. Now THAT's a sense of communal continuity!
