Ah but could that be because it was originally a henge, so its original purpose had some bearing on how it was eventually used when the stones turned up? As at Avebury too - which is remarkably 'closed' when you think about it, with the high banks around it blocking the view, as Bucky says. Henges are surely about isolation from the outside?
