In a different way Alex Chilton has been trading off of that kind of thing for eons on the basis of lets see .... six maybe seven really good songs and more than a few that would have been no more than filler on a Cheap Trick or Rubinoos record. Poor old Chris Bell is still residing in the "where are they now file" having made the one genius Big Star related album. No one mentions Bell in their lists of influences. And there's the rub.

That's true, except for Ivo Watts-Russell. (Those This Mortal Coil covers of "I Am The Cosmos" and "You And Your Sister") came out before any of Bell's solo work got re-issued, if I remember rightly. Also, I love his stuff and would mention him in my list of influences, but then I don't have a record deal (duh!). I don't particularly rate Alex Chilton's solo work, but I think it's a little harsh not to acknowledge "Sister Lovers" as genius along with "#1 Record".
