He is one of those people like say Brian Wilson who can be releasing any old cobblers for decades and still retain their mythic status. Everytime a newcomer cites Mozza as an influence then it's another notch on the old credibility bed post. Cope, Eldritch et al just don't ring enough bells with contemporary music makers or critics.

History has a way of finding out the beneficiaries of the work of puff merchants so it will be interesting who from the early 80s really ends up with all the critical and cultural prizes when there is forty or more years distance between them and us.

Suspect Mozza will come out as an interesting but quaint anachronism, a man-out-of-time like one time pop singer and "variety" tv entertainer Scot Walker.

In a different way Alex Chilton has been trading off of that kind of thing for eons on the basis of lets see .... six maybe seven really good songs and more than a few that would have been no more than filler on a Cheap Trick or Rubinoos record. Poor old Chris Bell is still residing in the "where are they now file" having made the one genius Big Star related album. No one mentions Bell in their lists of influences. And there's the rub.
