I regret not having been able to salvage the copies of NME etc that my elder brother collected in the early 80s. i'd read through them a lot while I was still living in Walthamstow. Shortly after I moved to London my mother threatened to throw them all out so I moved them to a friend's place and they got left there when he was forced to move out.
From memory I think the writing was of a reasonably good standard. It tended to turn people interested onto further areas of somewhat connected research. There were for example interviews with writers like JG Ballard who was a large influence on post-punk's lyricism/state of mind. I'd find it pretty difficult to imagine the tabloidised versions of MM or NME going anywhere near there.
Do wish I'd've had somewhere I could put those papers. I was very influenced by the reviews and articles in them. Made looking through 2nd hand recordshops & sales a lot easier. Not on the pocket though I guess.
