All very true.

What I really want from a review is to feel genuine enthusiasm conveyed as eloquently as possible but with the writer telling us what we NEED to know about a record rather than telling us everything he or she knows about everything. Whch is usually less than they imagine they know.

As you say HH is the place for getting a sense of what a record is really about. No one is going to like everything but I can't remember following up too many leads offered here and feeling I've wasted my time or have been jerked about on some journalistic ego trip. Even the records that are from well outside my usual range of interests (My Guitar Wants To Kill You for example not to mention Bald Waffle or whatever they are called) have been interesting.
