I often wish that we, as citizens, could personally decide how to allocate our taxes. I mean, if it really is “our” government, then why can’t we decide how our money is spent? The same way that the right is terrified that their hard-earned money might be subsidizing the lazy through social services, I am morally repulsed to think that any fraction of my taxes is aiding the military in its actions across the globe. If we could individually decide what programs our taxes should fund, then levels of military spending, welfare, etc would genuinely reflect the public will. The government would no longer be the “enemy” and instead of wasting our time with Republicans vs. Democrats (two sides of the same coin, in my opinion), we would actually be engaging our neighbors in substantive debates over national policy. But that would be democratic, wouldn’t it? And what kind of American would support something as radical as democracy?
