My local newspaper had a comments section for each story, & I used to post there. It was frequented by a bunch of conservative trolls... some really ugly people. But there were a few that made the effort to be civil, and so I'd try to be respectful of that.

Anyway, things just got way out of control... someone spam attacked the site at one point & it broke the camel's back... they took away the message board feature. It's probably for the best, tho, because of the amount of hostility and rudeness one had to wade thru.

The moderation of the boards was probably the biggest problem... their criteria tended to fail to see the forest for the trees. For example they'd delete messages with expletives in them that were otherwise on topic and well written, while leaving in scads of fallacious, libelous posts by a half dozen or so bombastic right wingers who were careful to not use four letter words.
