Cleira, there's a company in the USA called Bergey:

They design and build wind generators. With a tower-based design it's possible to supply all the energy an average home requires for an upfront cost of about ten grand.

Now I'm aware that's a large amount of money. However specialist equipment will always be expensive. Government intervention (grants to either the homeowner or the company - based on units sold) could radically reduce the cost.
